80 years of love, comfort and Holle
Thank you for your trust!
We are proud of our company's 80 years history and of the fact that Holle is one of the leading manufacturers of organic baby food. Nowhere else are quality expectations higher than with baby products. Your trust in Holle as parents is very much appreciated by us and we undertake to maintain our close connection to biodynamic agriculture.
Holle is one of the oldest baby food manufacturers in Europe. Albert Diefenbach founded the Holle food AG as a specialist food processing company in Arlsheim in 1933. This was the foundation for organic baby food. Even then the company's philosophy was based on anthroposophical dietary principles and biodynamic quality.
More than 80 products carry the "Love, Comfort and Holle" message. Since the very beginning natural quality has been our guiding principle - even 80 years ago Holle uncompromisingly rejected chemical processing and preservatives. Today, we use only raw ingredients from biodynamic or organic agriculture and gently process them for your baby. That is the basis of Holle's special quality.
We would like to thank you for your trust. We promise to continue to do all we can to help your baby thrive.
Holle baby food GmbH
Sustainability from the very beginning
It has been over 80 years since Holle began manufacturing baby food using Demeter products. We are conscious of the fact that we, as a manufacturer of baby food, bear a very special responsibility – for the environment; our babies and their future. As a result, sustainable management and social responsibility have always been among our company's core values. Our operating methods are based on the desire to ensure that future generations will be able to live in a healthy environment. In concrete terms, this means that we consistently work hard to make Holle even more sustainable, implementing a wide range of measures and projects.
We are participating in global climate protection under the motto "Making soil good". Since early 2013 we have been compensating for CO2e emissions generated during production of our baby milk formula. From November 2014 all Holle baby porridges and all Holle milk cereals will also be CO2e neutral products. Holle's goat milk formula has been climate-neutral since 2016. Further products, such as junior mueslis, are also due to be accredited. We obtain our emission certificates through the biodynamic compost projects of Soil & More in Egypt and South Africa.
As a partner of the German project Bruderhahn-Initiative Deutschland we are campaigning for more ethical husbandry and rearing of laying hens and broilers.
In addition to this, we support a range of projects aimed at promoting natural diversity instead of genetic engineering.
Holle offers a wide range of Demeter products like porridges, formula milks including goats milk nutrition, rusks or baby food jars from the first vegetables to junior menus. Since the very beginning, over 80 years ago, we have focused on naturalness and the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers are strictly prohibited without any compromises. Today we are still using only raw ingredients grown to biodynamic or organic standards for our baby food: The basis for the special quality in the Holle baby food.
The production for the Holle baby formula milks and baby porridges takes place in Germany. Our production lines are modern using the newest technology and are ISO certified. The grain used for our formula milks and porridges grows in healthy soil on Demeter certified biodynamic farms in Germany. Additional we are only buying in rice from Italy and millet grain from Hungary.
Because we have your child in mind we are only using Demeter grains from organic farmers with whom we have a long-term established and trustful relationship.
The milk we are using for the Holle Organic milk formulas is produced in organic farms in south Germany. For our baby food jars we are using exclusively organic fruit and vegetables and meat from either biodynamic or organic agriculture. This ensures the best quality, tasty and full of nutrition which are so important for babies and children.

Demeter is the trademark for goods produced from biodynamic agriculture. Only strictly regulated partners are able to use the Demeter label. These regulations are set by the Demeter Society, whose criteria extend far beyond the standard organic farming certification. From growing to processing, all stages of production are checked - without any compromises. You can read more about the Demeter organization.
The EU Organic Certification logo appears on every one of our baby foods. It is your guarantee that our products are grown and processed in a tightly regulated way to ensure its quality. Under the green logo you will find a certification number showing where a product was produced and where it was checked. DE for instance stands for Germany. Underneath, there is also a note about the origin of the processed raw materials, e.g. " EU-agriculture". Here you can read more about the EU Organic Certification organization.
Holistic quality through working with nature
Foods which carry the Demeter label have been grown to strict biodynamic standards - in harmony with nature. Biodynamic farmers use an organic approach that harnesses the holistic qualities of their growing cycles. Whether soil, seeds, plants, animals or humans - each element in the agricultural system has its own uniquely important role to play. Each element supports and strengthens the others and in doing so creates a farm that is a natural and self-contained living organism.
The use of chemical and synthetic pesticides and fertilizers and GM technology are strictly prohibited in biodynamic agriculture, as is the addition of questionable ingredients during processing.
Demeter agriculture is unique in its consistent and holistic approach because, through its biodynamic growing methods, it gives back to nature more than it takes out.
Quality through animal husbandry in a way that is natural to the species
Not all milk is the same - and Demeter milk has the most plus points. Feeding ruminants in a way that is natural to each species as well as having careful processing methods such as those in Demeter dairies are the best conditions for health-promoting milk quality.
No cows without horns – Demeter has the highest animal husbandry standards
The cows at Demeter operations have horns. They are not only good-looking, but they are also important for digestion and the metabolism. Animal husbandry in a way that is natural to each species has an effect on the composition of the cow's milk. It contains quite a lot of vitamin E and beta carotene. There is a high proportion of valuable omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in the fat. The taste of the milk is delicious and harmonious due to the proportion of herbs in the feed.
The only baby formula in Demeter quality
Holle uses only premium quality Demeter certified milk to make it's organic baby formula. What's so special about it? Demeter farmers raise their animals in a uniquely humane and caring environment. For example, they don't remove a cow's horns - a painful procedure for the animal. Horns are also involved in the cow's digestive process and retaining them helps to maintain the milk's quality as well as being kinder to the animal. The result: Demeter raised cows produce wholesome and tasty milk - the ideal basis for Holle organic milk formulas.
In Harmony with Nature for your Baby
Every grain of the different cereals we use for our baby porridges naturally contains a myriad of essential nutrients and fibre. Grown in harmony with nature, Demeter certified grains are full of flavour and vitality. At Holle we only use whole grains for our porridges. This makes sure your baby gets the most goodness from every mouthful.
Valuable nutrients and vital elements
We cook our grain using the very gentlest of methods and then finely ground them so every Holle porridge can be easily digested by young babies. We unlock the goodness so your baby can thrive.
Demeter fruit and vegetables
Quality through variety and freshness
Fruit and vegetables are our main source of vitamins, minerals and trace elements. What's more, Demeter certified fruit and vegetables taste just like they ought to - full of traditional flavours.
This comes from making sure we use the right varieties for particular growing conditions. We also use traditional methods of cultivation and care, and then we harvest at exactly the right time. Only in this way can our fruit and vegetables have the opportunity to develop their highest nutrient profile. Traditional farming, working in harmony with the environment, really does offer us the best of nature's bounty.
Typically, biodynamic agriculture uses special preparations made from herbs, minerals and manure. Each farmer prepares his own mixes from the produce from his land and applies them in regular doses to increase the fertility of the soil. Biodynamic meadows and farmland and the plants growing on them are particularly rich in nutrients. This way we give your baby healthy and natural tasting food.
Animal husbandry plays a central role in bio-dynamic farming. Demeter is the only ecological agricultural organization which prescribes animal husbandry as an obligatory activity, thus creating a consistent cycle.
Demeter is a trend-setter when it comes to keeping animals in a way which is appropriate to their needs. Demeter cows, for example, have horns, sparing them from the painful de-horning procedure. Demeter farmers are firmly convinced that the integrity and physical inviolability of all forms of life is key to the positive development of farms as holistic organisms.
Criteria for Demeter animal husbandry:
- Animals must be kept in a manner appropriate to their needs, with plenty of space and outdoor exercise
- Animal welfare by respecting animals as complete entities - thus no de-horning or clipping of beaks
- 100 % organic feed, the majority of which must be grown on the farm
- Priority given to natural healing processes when animals become ill
- Processing which preserves quality
Quality thanks to ethical animal husbandry guidelines
For many years now Holle has been sourcing its poultry meat from the Demeter farm Bauckhof Klein Süstedt. The owner, Carsten Bauck, is one of the main initiators of the Bruderhahn Initiative Deutschland (BID - German Brother Rooster Project) founded in 2012. The project adheres to comprehensive ecological and ethical guidelines for the breeding of laying hens and broilers.
Holle has been supporting the Bruderhahn Initiative Deutschland since 2013 by purchasing guaranteed quantities of meat produced within the scope of brother rooster rearing. As of March 2014 Holle will be using only chicken sourced from brother rooster rearing at Bauckhof for its Organic Baby Jars with chicken.
Setting new standards by doing away with an unethical practice
The Bruderhahn Initiative Deutschland has taken up the cause of developing alternatives and ethically justifiable solutions to the one-sided rearing common in conventional poultry husbandry. For example by breeding dual-purpose races; extending the length of use of birds or by rearing laying hens' male chicks instead of killing them immediately after hatching because they are not considered profitable.
The Bruderhahn Initiative Deutschland addresses the urgent issue of brother roosters and has developed an alternative method for dealing with the brothers of laying hens - all the brothers of laying hens are reared, even if this represents an additional financial cost.
The BID label - The quality guarantee provided by Bruderhahn Initiative Deutschland.
Carrots are mild, slightly sweet and easy on babies' tummies. This makes them a very popular vegetable for introducing babies to solids. Carrots can, however, cause slight constipation. If this is the case parsnips, broccoli or pumpkin are good alternatives. During the first fortnight start off by feeding your baby a few spoonsful of cooked, pureed vegetable, gradually increasing the amount as you progress.
We recommend adding two teaspoons of weaning oil per jar of baby food or per approx. 190-200g of freshly cooked vegetables.
Babies find it easier to eat if fed with a plastic spoon as it is not as cold as a metal one. When starting with solids, babies will only eat small amounts and it can be practical to freeze meals or jars of baby food in several small portions. These portions can be thawed out as required. Please note that baby food should never be frozen and thawed more than once.
If the carrot meal is handled easily during the first two weeks, then the pure carrot meal should be replaced with a carrot-potato meal.
90g Carrots (or another vegetable like parsnip, broccoli or pumpkin)
2 teaspoons Holle organic weaning oil
2 tablespoons Organic orange juice
Wash the vegetable and peel the potatoes and cut both into small cubes. Boil the vegetables and potatoes in just a small amount of water until both ingredients are soft. Puree the mash and add some oil as well as the fruit juice.
Somewhat later, we recommend adding some meat (ca. 25 g) to the pure carrot-potato meal 2-3 times a week. Meat contains important nutrients and promotes the resorption of essential iron. Lean veal, beef or chicken meat should be used. If you don't want to prepare the meat yourself, then you can use the vegetable-meat jars from Holle.
90-100g Vegetable (carrots, parsnip, zucchini, pumpkin, broccoli)
25g Lean beef
2 teaspoons Holle organic weaning Oil
2 tablespoons Organic apple juice
Cut the beef into small cubes and boil it in just a small amount of water until it is cooked. Clean the vegetable and peel the potatoes and cut them into small cubes as well. Then, add the vegetables and potato to the meat and boil the mash until the vegetables and potato are soft. Puree the mash and add the apple juice and oil to it.
The vegetable meat meal can be supplemented to a fully-fledged meal by using the Holle organic infant grain porridge. Just mix 2 tablespoons of Holle porridge (any variety) and 2 teaspoons of weaning oil into the still hot vegetable puree - that's it!
2-3 tablespoons Holle organic rice porridge (or any other kind of Holle organic grain porridge)
Water as needed
25g Lean beef
2 teaspoons Holle organic weaning oil
2 tablespoons Organic apple juice
Cut the beef into small cubes and boil it in just a small amount of water until it is cooked. Wash the vegetable and cut it into small cubes. Add the vegetables to the meat and boil with a small amount of water until it is soft. Then add the porridge. Puree the mash and add water as required. Add some oil as well as the apple juice to the pureed mash and then it is ready.
Milk-grain porridge with Holle Organic Formula 2
The second porridge is usually the milk-grain porridge, which replaces an evening breastfeeding or bottle meal. This milk-grain porridge is prepared with the Holle organic infant porridges and milk with the addition of fruit juice that is rich in vitamin C. Breast milk, Holle infant formula or fresh milk can be used as milk.
5 measuring spoons Holle organic Follow-on Formula 2
3-4 tablespoons Holle organic porridge
Boil 150ml of water and allow it to cool to 50°C. First of all mix in 5 tablespoons of Holle organic Formula 2 and then add 3-4 tablespoons of Holle organic porridge. As of the 10th month, the preparation can also be made with Holle Organic Formula 3.
Milk-grain porridge with fresh whole milk
100ml Fresh whole milk
5 tablespoons Holle organic Porridge
2 tablespoons Organic apple fruit juice
Boil 100ml of fresh whole milk and 100ml water and allow the liquid to cool to 50°C. Then put the liquid on a plate and mix in 5 tablespoons of Holle organic porridge. To make it easier to absorb iron, we recommend adding 2 tablespoons of a vitamin C rich fruit juice as well. You should now let the porridge thicken and cool to an eating temperature.
Milk-grain porridge with breast milk
130ml Breast milk
5 tablespoons Holle organic porridge
Mix 5 tablespoons of organic porridge in 130ml of warm breast milk. And the porridge is ready. When prepared with breast milk, the milk-grain porridge often becomes liquid again after being left for a short time. Enzymes that are still intact are mainly responsible for this. If the porridge becomes liquid too soon, then prepare smaller portions.
As of approximately the 8th month, your baby is able to eat more chunky food. The vegetable porridge with grain is no longer pureed as much and the fruit porridge can contain somewhat coarser pieces of fruit. This change to the consistency of the food stimulates the baby to chew. He can now also be served the Holle organic junior meals in jars. Then, as of the 12th month and thereafter, you can slowly make the transition to general family food, naturally with less salt, spices and sweeteners.
Break two Holle Organic Baby Spelt Rusks into pieces and place them in a bowl. Boil 140ml water and pour evenly over the rusks. Leave to soak for a short time and mash with a fork. Add around 100g freshly grated fruit or Holle fruit jar, e.g. Pure Pear or Pure Apple & Banana to taste. To increase the amount of essential fatty acids and available vitamins, add 1 teaspoon Holle Organic Baby Weaning Oil. Leave to cool until ready to eat.
